Abstract
Palingga, 2014. The problem of the study formulation in the
form of question “Is it significantly effective to improve student skills in
speaking with make group discussion for eleventh gradeof Senior High School?”.
Then, the objective of study are Students on fourth semester of STKIP PGRI
Lubuklinggau. To find the benefits of making a group discussion to improving
speaking skill. The method is Qualification Experimental. The writer was taken
one class as sample of research with 20 students and practice to make a group discussion.
In order that the
discussion is not to briad and would be more specific, the writer presents the
scope to the researches follow :
·
Teaching
speaking will done by using to make a group
·
Offering
the hottest public issues with pro and contrass opinion with debatable mathery.
Based on the formulation of the study above

improve students skills in speaking with making group discussion for eleventh
grade of Senior High School.
The writer really expected this research will
probably give the contribution for educational sphere.
·
The
student can develop their speaking skill exactly in spelling or pronounciation
and always tries to make their skills sharper with practice more.
·
The
teacher would get new information to explore their teaching method and make the
student enjoys with the material from teacher
·
The
writer could get new experiences in teaching and probably ready to be a teacher
in the future and give a little contribution for educational world.
Introduction
A. Background
of Study
As we known, in English there are four main
skills that may achieved or studied by student like : Speaking, Writing,
Reading, and Listening. Basicly, the important thing in English are Listening
and Speaking.
Speaking is an interactive process of
transferring maning that receiving and producing voice so can indicate the
speaker and listener will communication each other. Based on Greenwood (2009)
humans have not only speculate about nature and cause of mind and behavior. For
example a child who tried to learned language of human kind, and also listened
his parents first and try to speaking or copied the voice. After that he had
been tried speaking for long time. And then he can expressed thelanguage with
good pronounciation, he would to try talking with his friend andbecome to
socialty human. He decided to known the world that he never knew for years
before. Besides that he have to did the education, and in this education he
can`t realized the teacher will held some study methods in English or other
courses there is Making A Groups Discussions or Study Team works.
The illustration before we know that
listening is concerned with the uses of language orally to directed a human to
can spoke well. With group we would try to listening for processed friends
mindset and from spoken we would practice speaking and courage to express what
we thinking before. Cloud (2012) says “if you are building a culture where
honest expectations are communicater and peer accountability is the norm, then
the group will address poor performance and attitudes.”. In groups we will be
try to working together. But not also work together, because sometimes we
always want to be dominant. Gandhi saysthere are two kinds of people.those who
do the work and those who take the credit. Try to be inyhe first group: there
is lets competition there. If we try to use this method,we have to know the
function or the benefits from working groups. The writers just have read Gloria
J. Galanes books Communicating in Groups,
Applications and Skills (New York : 2009) The students can :
·
Explain
and give examples of a member an effective participant and observers.
·
Groups
will make the students beactive to transfered themselves ideas.
·
Groups
have more information available about the problem.
·
Can
correct each other misinformation available without feel ashamed.
·
Can
minimize the passive student.
And the writers fills one point again : we
can scored the active, passive, emotional student. Make the students adding the
vocabulary, trained the pronuonciation, and grammar to make the speaking well.
B. Operational
Defenitions
To avoid the readers , misunderstanding of
the terms used in this Study, the writer would like to explain them clearly :
1.
Teaching
Activities of teacher to transferred
knowledge to the students
Theoritical Framework
A. Concept
of Teaching
Sequiera (2010) It is an
accepted fact that teachers are usually not born but made. Good teachers
nurture their knowledge and skills through constant and deliberate efforts. One
of the pre-requisite to be good teacher is to understand the teaching learning
process in more depth. This facilitates better appreciation of the teaching
profession as well as the process of imparting education. This paper is
intended to give an insight into the concept of teaching and learning for
teachers who intend to excel in their teaching career.
B.
Concept of Daily Speaking
Daily speaking is an
activities in orally communication that always we do in our class between a
teacher and the student. It may be held in our houses.
Based on Gerald (2014), The capacity
to put words together in a meaningful way to reflect thoughts, opinions, and
feelings provides the speaker with these important advantages:
• Ability to inform, persuade, and direct. Business managers,
educators, military leaders, lawyers, and politicians, among others, seek to
develop their speaking skills to such a level that they are transformed into
master communicators. Speaking clearly and confidently can gain the attention
of an audience, providing the golden opportunity for the speaker to make the
message known. Wise is the speaker who gains and then holds the attention of an
audience, with well-chosen words in a well-delivered presentation, forming a
message that is effective, informative, and understood.
• Ability to stand out from the rest. When one thinks of
speaking skills, one tends to think of it as a common skill. Think again. The
ability to stand before others and speak effectively is not an ordinary
ability. Many people are deathly afraid of public speaking; others have little
ability to form thoughts into sentences and then deliver those words in a
believable way. The bad news is that at any given moment the world has precious
few with the speaking talents of, say, Winston Churchill or John F. Kennedy.
The good news is that a speaker whose skills are honed and developed with
constant application and hard work can stand out.
• Ability to benefit derivatively. Well-developed verbal
skills can increase one’s negotiation skills. Self-confidence is improved. A
growing sense of comfort comes from speaking in front of larger and larger
audiences. A reputation for excellence in speaking can accrue over time,
thereby imparting a certain credibility to the speaker.
• Career enhancement. Employers have always valued the ability
to speak well. It is, and always will be, an important skill, and well worth
the effort in fully developing. In my latest novel Dare Not Blink, main character Dave Paige has
consistently moved up the corporate ladder due in part to his ability to
present his ideas clearly and persuasively.
Speaking skills are important for
career success, but certainly not limited to one’s professional aspirations.
Speaking skills can enhance one’s personal life, thereby bringing about the
well-rounded growth we should all seek.
Our teachers are phenomenally
supportive and our students tell us year after year that their improv class at
the school is their favorite part of the wee
C. Concept
of Group Disscussion
According to Wikipedia (2015) A discussion group is a group of
individuals with similar interest who gather either formally or informally to
bring up ideas, solve problems or give comments. The major approaches are in person, via conference call or website. People respond comments and post forum in established mailing list, news group or Other group members could choose to respond by
posting text or image.
Method
Approach
A. Research
Design
1.
Research
Variables
There are two variables in this study, namely
the independent variable and dependent variable. The making groups is the
independent variable since it influences the student achievement in learning in
speaking vocabularies and brave to speaking in front of class as the dependent
variable. This is the chart of the research variables below.
2.
Method
of Research
By using quasi-experimental design, the
writer controlled the variable as limits. The procedure of this method was
pre-practice, treatment, and post-practice such as post-test.
B. Population
and Sample
1.
Population
Population is the group which the writer
would like to have the result of study to be generalized. It includes all
individuals with certain specific characteristic (Fraenkel and Wallen, 1993).
Population is all of the subjects in the research.
In this research the writer choose the
eleventh grade students at the Senior High School number 6 in academic year of
2016-2017 as the population in this study. There are fourclasses of eleventh
grade students. The description of the population was shown in the following
table.

2.
Sample
Sample is a part of population in research
(Arikunto, 2006). To choose the samples, writer uses the cluster random
sampling, and take one class as the experiment class. As the result class IV
B,which is consisting of 20 students as the experimental class or as the sample
of the study.
C. Technique
for Collecting the Data
In this study, the writer uses speaking test
for collecting the data. The test given twice ; the first test will given
before the student were teach (pre-test), and the second after they were teach
(post-test). The writer give 3 items of topics to discuss. And the student will
be try to explain the concept of they opinion about the topics. In the
post-test, the writer give the student the same question as the pre-test. To
have a good test, the validity and reliability of the test will been estimated
first.
D. Technique
for Analyzing the Data
In analizing the data obtain from the test
the writer do the certain steps. The writer apply three techniques they are
individual score, score range, and matched t-test.
1.
Individuals
Score
Individual score analysis is applies to find
out the student individual scores and given by using the formula as follows :
IS =
x 100

Where :
IS :
Individual Scores
R :
Number of Correct Answer
N :
Number of Test Items (Hatch and Farhady, 1982)
2.
Score Range
The score range is use to interpret the
students individual scores as presented below :

Discussion
Theory Validity
In this investigation the validity of the
test materials is check through content validity. A form of validity is based
on the degree to which a test adequately measures the particular skills or
behavior it sets out to measure.
Result
From the sample of class IV B, it is
15/20 students can improving their speaking skill, after the writer made a
group discussion, the writer gave a topics for each group and represented their
arguments in front of class one by one with 15 minutes/group.
After that, the writer gave a
quisionary with 5 question about the topics. And most of student got 80-95
scores.
Conclusion
From this research, we would try to improving
the activities in teaching English for Senior High Schools student. In groups
disscussions we will be try to working together. But not also work together,
because sometimes we always want to be dominant. Gandhi saysthere are two kinds
of people.those who do the work and those who take the credit. Try to be inyhe
first group: there is lets competition there.
1.
Suggestion
·
The
student can develop their speaking skill exactly in spelling or pronounciation
and always tries to make their skills sharper with practice more.
·
The
teacher would get new information to explore their teaching method and make the
student enjoys with the material from teacher.
·
The
writer could get new experiences in teaching and probably ready to be a teacher
in the future and give a little contribution for educational world.
